Summaries:
Alba – Smalltown Innocence
is the second daughter of a schoolteacher in a small Danish town. We follow her through the outbreak of World War II and the German occupation of Denmark 1940-45. She is not her mother’s dream of a daughter, she is not pretty, she is rebellious and stubborn. But after the first disastrous years she turns out to be useful in the household and smart in school. However, her dreams of the future do not please her father, so still being rebellious, she takes
A Leap into Europe and the World
She becomes fascinated – and seduced? – to work for the movement of Moral Re–Armament, which offers her a unique opportunity to break away from home. She starts as au-pair in a French family in Paris, and the following two years are filled with adventures, meeting nice, positive, talented and exciting people of several nationalities and receiving an ocean of skills and experiences.
People and Places in North America
is her next challenge, as a Canadian family invites her with them to Toronto. At the same time, it is a plunge from post-war Europe into the materially advanced Canada and USA, who had not experienced war or occupation on their own soil. Alba is still working for Moral Re-Armament and meets again some nice and interesting people in various places both in Canada and the United States. But she discovers that all is not ideal behind the surface. She wants to get out and home to Denmark, but she has no money – everyone works without salary, and she will not ask her parents to help her out.
The Ugly Side of a Good Cause
describes, how Alba managed to get out of the claws of the controlling people, who were taking over what she believed to be a good cause and turned it ugly. She had to outsmart them. She made a plan, came home to Denmark, and maneuvered herself free of the movement and into a position from where she could start her first career.
These five years were in no way wasted. The greatest experience and gain, however, was to discover that she was able to hold on to her sound and critical sense and get out of the game in time!
